Millions of Europeans and Americans are crypto-jews,but sinds ages are christians or muslims.
As you will know in the Roman Empire about 10% of the total people in that Empire were jews. So this means millions! But many of the more hellenistic jews (there were millions of them living outside Babylon or Palestine) converted to christianity. Christianity is a more universal religion than the ethno-centric-minded Judaism, but in essential they are same. Christianity is a hellenistic form of Judaism. It is a far more individual approach towards religion. Later there were also Jews in the Arab countries, who converted to Muslim-religion. But not that many, because the Talmud (that made cohesion in the jewish tribe) was allready finished and halacha practised. Many of those halachic rules caused hostility towards the jewish religion and not without reason. That is why after the french revolution there was necessity to reform Judaism. A more universal form was necessary for the jews.Only assimilation was a thread for many rabbi's. They lost their power and did not know how to handle with the new situation in the 19 century. They could ofcourse made Judaism universal and accept non-jews as converts, but this was and still is some kind of taboo in the jewish community. You are jew by race and not by conviction.Only professor Friedrich Weinreb in Holland tried to do this and he wrote many books about the Thora and the Talmud, but with a very universal outlook. It is very origional in its interpretation of the Thora and the Talmud and differs 180 % with the religous-zionistic approach of for instance rabbi Kahane or rabbi Kook.
